Ozarks Bootmaker Keeps Craft Alive
KOLR 10`s Marybeth Brush found that a lot of hard work and effort go into custom-made boots and they are specifically tailored to fit your feet.
From the Wild West to today`s rodeo competitions, many cowboys and girls are still showing off their boots. And an Ozarks boot maker custom builds his wears in his small western style shop.
Joe Patrickus says, "I`m actually fifth generation in this trade and my son Joe is sixth. Plus, my apprenticeship was under my uncle. So that`s how much Missouri history plays into what we do."
Patrickus says he`s one of only a dozen full time boot makers left in Missouri and his business keeps growing because of his clients.
He says, "Believe it or not, we have more cattle in the state of Missouri than in Texas and there`s a lot of people that do wear boots. Our clientele over the years have really guided us into what we are doing today."
Even though his boots are made in the Ozarks, Patrickus` clients are not just here in the Show Me State.
He says, "We ship our boots from here in Missouri all over the world; we just had a lady from Saudi Arabia."
Patrickus shows KOLR 10 what it takes to go from idea to finished product and it`s a pretty extensive process. The whole process takes some time.
"A basic boots takes about 40 hours." says Patrickus.
But depending on how creative you get, you can bet some boots will take more than 40 hours. Patrickus says they take up to about 400 hours. No matter the hours or the effort, Patrickus is glad to keep his business growing in Camdenton
As for the price, a basic pair of boots starts around $900, but they last you for years, even decades, depending on how you take care of them.
