Baseball2007-07-06-1183763027.jpgThe highest drafted player in the history of Missouri State baseball signed a contract to pitch for the Washington Nationals Friday.

Southpaw Ross Detwiler got to throw out the first pitch before the Nationals game, and he'll also get a $2.15 million dollar signing bonus.

The Nationals drafted Detwiler as the sixth overall pick in June's draft. Detwiler pitched for three years at Missouri State, last season he struck out 110 batters in 89 innings with an earned run average of 2.22.

The St. Louis native will report to the Florida State league for two starts, and then will most likely move to Class A Potomac.

Washington scouts say if Detwiler produces in the minors, he could be a September call-up to the big league Washington Nationals.

He would be the third player in Nationals history to make that jump.
