Springfield city crews were drilling today inside a sinkhole that opened up at a home on South Dayton Street earlier this week.

Cindy Forrest says the 20-foot deep hole opened Tuesday morning in her front yard.

City workers drilled down about twelve feet Friday to get soil samples.

They'll be analyzed to help determine how extensive the sinkhole is.Daytonsinkhole2007-06-15-1181942288.jpg

A storm drain dumps runoff down into the nearby Erie Street sinkhole and is supposed to go along a spillway and away from area homes.

But Forrest believes the water is going under her house through an active cave system that leads to another sinkhole on Ferguson Street.
