The Springfield police department says it's time for people who get repeated parking tickets to pay up.

Police plan to ask the City Council to spend the money to buy tire locking devices, commonly known as "boots", to help collect overdue parking tickets for repeat violators.

Police Chief Lynn Rowe says the city collects about 85% of the tickets issued.  But there are some chronic
abusers who toss the tickets aside and ignore them.

If the Council agrees to pay the $500 per device cost, Rowe says officers will be able to carry the boots in their patrol cars, and attach them to the tires of vehicles that have more than 2 unpaid parking tickets.

The Council will hear a first reading of the bill authorizing the expense, and hold a public hearing, at
it's June 18 meeting.
