Today is the beginning of 'Communities in Motion Week' in Springfield -- a time when City Utilities is trying to raise awareness about public transportation.

C-U is hosting a number of activities this week, including this blood drive and free ride day.

Dozens of people rolled up their sleeves to help with the blood drive Monday, which  benefits the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks.

This drive is the first of several events this week that are all designed to promote public transportation, says C-U transit manager David Deragawski, "Tomorrow will be free ride day.  That means that anybody that would like to try out public transporation, we'll be glad to help them.  They can call us here. Our number is 831-8782 and we'd be glad to plan their ride for them."

C-U will also give out free donuts at its Park Central transfer center on Wednesday.
Last year,  C-U Transit Services provided 1.9 million rides in Springfield.
