SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- In a one-week span, the Southern Missouri Region of the American Red Cross says it helped 81 fire victims.

The local chapter of the organization serves 40 counties, including Greene, which saw three single-family fires -- impacting nine people -- between Jan. 11 and Jan. 17.

Nearly $12,000 in direct monetary aid was provided to the 81 people. Those impacted needed a place to stay, money for clothes, food, and medicine.

The Red Cross says assistance was provided in 15 separate counties.

1. If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL for help.
2. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Test them every month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
3. Talk with household members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.
