Despite mixed reviews, it was a record-breaking opening weekend for the return to Middle Earth.
The fantasy world of The Hobbit made some box office magic, bringing in $84.8 million.
That's the highest ever for a December debut, even more than Avatar in its first weekend.
The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey, is the first in a trilogy that takes place before the Lord of the Rings film series that came out a decade ago.
And it was a close battle for the rest of the top five. None of them made more than $10 million.
Skyfall, the latest James Bond movie, was last week's winner. This week it brought in $7 million.
