WAYNESVILLE, Mo. -- Some area soldiers said goodbye to their families Monday morning before heading to Afghanistan.

Fort Leonard Wood held a ceremony at Nutter Field House for members of the 77th Engineer Company, 94th Battalion.

The more than 170 soldiers, assigned to the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, will be overseas for nine months to a year.

Their duties will include construction work. Fort Leonard Wood officials say the soldiers will be disassembling NATO facilities no longer needed as the combat mission in Afghanistan nears its end.
