EPA Refuses to Change Renewable Energy Standards

By: Missouri News Horizon

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Environmental Protection Agency rules that the nation's renewable energy standards will remain in place.

Governors from several states sought a waiver from the current standards reasoning that a reduction in the production of corn-based ethanol would put more corn on the market and lower prices.

Corn prices rose sharply over the summer due to the widespread drought. But the EPA ruled Friday that releasing grain in the renewable energy program would only lower corn prices by one percent, and refused to grant the waiver.
