Final Report on Rountree Train Whistle Project: No Quiet Zone

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Acting on a flurry of opposition by neighbors, the City of Springfield formally says it will not persue a "quiet zone" for the Rountree neighborhood.

A public meeting in September resulted in very vocal opposition to the city's proposal to close some streets in the Rountree district, as a way to protect against car-train accidents along a BNSF line that runs through the neighborhood.  The City proposed new gates at three intersections and the closure of three others: Weller, Delaware and Madison.

The city's final report on the issue proposes no street closures or crossing improvements. The report includes an overview of the quiet zone proposal; reviews and responses to public input; and establishes a definite end to the project at this time.
