SPRINGFIELD, Mo -- This may seem like a foul statement, but maybe some day at Plaster Sports Complex the other kind of football will be the main attraction.
Ben Griffiths, "I think that would be fantastic. That's definitely the goal."
But before you pull the red card, the Missouri State men's soccer team can defend the possibilities, and just about everything else.
Coach Jon Leamy, "Everything starts with our defense. You know if you're not giving up goals, good things are going to happen."
Good things did happen. Through September 16th the bears defense ranked ninth in the nation in shutout percentage and goals against average, in simple terms, MSU's defense is one of the best in the entire nation.
Griffiths, "It's important, we've been working on this before the spring of last year."
Coach Leamy, "Our team feels like we can defend and play with anybody and it's the kind of thing we need to be and we will be."
While the team defense is gaining national recognition... The most identifiable member of the "d", well, he's just keeping up with his teammates.
Andrew Riggs, "I was just wanting to be one of the top goalies in the conference, then all this national stuff kept coming up and I'm just thrilled about it."
Andrew himself ranks in at 10th in the nation in goals against average and 11th in the nation in save percentage, all in the efforts of putting the bears outside the box.
Coach Leamy, "And he's just been real solid for us. We've been very good with Drew and honestly our entire back four."
Riggs, "We've been working hard, we've been preparing ever since last year, in the spring and in the summer."
Griffiths,"It's good we're being recognized and we hope to keep it going."
