JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The latest polls show her trailing Republican challenger Todd Akin. Does Senator Claire McCaskill think Missouri is a dead red state?

"I don't know that it really adds anything to the discussion to think about in those terms. I know Missouri. And I know they want a good, old-fashioned moderate."

Sen. McCaskill says Rep. Akin is outside of the mainstream of the Republican Party.

"He certainly is very close to the part of the party that is Michelle Bachman, and Steve King and Rand Paul and some of the people that have really extreme views."

Sen. McCaskill says Missourians want a moderate such as herself on Capitol Hill. Latest poll numbers show Sen. McCaskill trailing Akin by up to 11 points.
