Sheriff Jim Arnott says a resident had been burning trash in a cinder block fire pit the previous day. That resident, says Arnott, checked to make sure the fire had been put out before leaving it, but high winds picked up and carried burning embers into a nearby field, setting off the wildfire.
The Walnut Grove Fire Department had to call in more than a dozen departments for assistance.
On Monday, the Greene County Sheriff's Office announced plans to submit the investigation to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office for review of any potential criminal charges.
Sheriff Arnott reminds residents that any burning during the current weather can quickly get out of control. He's asking that everyone refrain from burning for the time being.
