LAMPE, Mo. -- A 14-year-old boy who was airlifted from Kanakuk Kamps after jumping from a bluff is heading back to the camp.

Jay Holden, a spokesman for the camp, says the teen jumped 30 feet into Table Rock Lake around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Southern Stone County Fire Protection District arrived to find the boy complaining of a back injury.

The boy was Life Flighted to Mercy Health in Springfield. He was taking part in an optional bluff jumping event near the Baxter boat dock.

"We're really pleased with the emergency response," says Holden. "Great test of the system."

He says the teen was checked out of the hospital a few hours later, and is returning to the camp near Lampe.

"The Kamper jumped off of the bluff according to Kanakuk safety standards established for this regular activity. He was wearing a life jacket and there was a certified lifeguard on duty. The depth of the water is carefully checked."

The Missouri Highway Patrol is now investigating; the scene was cleared within an hour.
