Baxter County Sheriff Warns of Door-to-Door Magazine Scam

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. -- The Baxter County Sheriff is warning residents about a door-to-door magazine subscription scam.

Sheriff John Montgomery says someone is trying to sell magazines purportedly on behalf of the local German American Partnership Program (GAPP), which is a program associated with the Mountain Home Public Schools.

The sheriff says his office got a call about a man doing just that in Mountain Home. Sheriff Montgomery says the residents in that case were swayed into buying the magazines, but stopped payment when they realized they'd been scammed.

The Sheriff's Office says it consulted with a Mountain Home Police Department School Resource Officer Thursday morning, and "verified with representatives of the local GAPP program that they are not going door to door selling magazines or any other items, nor have they contracted with or agreed for other persons or organizations to do so on their behalf."

Sheriff Montgomery says residents should not purchase magazines or conduct business with magazine sales people unless they're able to verify the legitimacy of the activity with known sources or contacts. Call authorities if you find yourself being victimized.
