(Springfield, MO) -- After more than eight years in downtown Springfield, retailer Staxx will soon be moving.

It's not by choice; Meghan Chambers, who owns the clothing store at 331 South Avenue, says she was told another tenant would soon be taking over.

Chambers' business has been selling upscale clothing at that location since March 2004. She recently got the call from former Springfield Mayor Tom Carlson, who owns the building.

"We've enjoyed downtown. I mean, we love the area and we love the people. I am personally having a hard time with the move because I have built really strong relationships."

Staxx closed Tuesday in preparation for Wednesday's "Mega Moving Sale." It brought hundreds of people to the store for bargains.

"It's difficult and a sad move for me personally and for my employees."

Chambers says she wanted to stay in downtown Springfield, but a spot at the French Quarter Plaza (1632 E. Republic Road) was too good to pass up. It features an additional 1,000 square-feet of retail space.

"We are looking forward to opening in a larger space with more merchandise, new lines, and a brand new look."

Staxx will remain open through the end of July. The new location is expected to open after August 1st.

Little is known about the future tenant at Walnut and South. The Urban Districts Alliance says it's part of the evolution of downtown.

"Our base of retailers is growing and we expect it to continue to," says Rusty Worley.
