(Dunnegan, MO) -- Authorities in Polk County are investigating the shooting death of a man Sunday that apparently started as a domestic dispute.

Deputies were called out to a house on East 385th Road in Dunnegan just after 7 p.m. Sunday.

They found Chad B. Smith, 33, of Fair Grove, with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was airlifted to a hospital in Bolivar where he died, according to a news release issued by the Sheriff's office Monday.

"It appears at this time that Mr. Smith was the aggressor and had threatened several people at this address," says the office in a statement. "According to witnesses, this had been ongoing all day on June 3, 2012."

The Polk County Sheriff says Smith was upset with a former girlfriend for not getting back together with him following his release from prison.

No charges have been filed in the case. A 27-year-old was arrested and quested, but later released. It's believed Smith thought that man was seeing his ex-girlfriend.

"The investigation is ongoing at this point, but it does not appear charges will be filed."

An autopsy by the Polk County Coroner is pending.
