(Springfield, MO) -- The process of selecting Missouri State University's 11th president is officially underway.

The Presidential Search Committee has begun advertising and publicizing the opening. It says candidates must get their applications in by July 13, 2012.

It's hoped that three finalists will be named in time for on-campus interviews in October; a new president is likely to be announced by November, with a start date in early 2013.

A website has been launched for the presidential search. A 20-member search committee was formed in March.

Clifton M. "Clif" Smart III has been serving as interim president since June 27, 2011, when he was appointed to replace Dr. James E. Cofer, Sr., the 10th President.

Smart has indicated that he will be a candidate for the permanent position.
