Some deserving teachers are being honored for their hard work in the classroom.  Wednesday, the Turner Family Foundation started handing out it's annual awards for excellence.

Each year the foundation honors five area teachers for their excellence in teaching reading.

Project director Linda Regan says the teachers are given the award plus a $2,000 gift.  "From our perspective, that makes it meaningful out in the community who wants to invest in what this teacher is doing. but truly I can tell you for the teacher,  it comes back to knowing in their heart that they are reaching a child."

The winners must be certified teachers in the district and can be nominated by anyone in the community.

This is the sixth year the Turner Foundation has presented the awards.
