(New York, NY) -- The President-elect of the American College of Surgeons has resigned.
The move comes after Dr. Lazar Greenfield published an editorial in "Surgery News" citing research that found female college students who had unprotected sex were less depressed than those whose partners used a condom.
He speculated that semen had an antidepressant effect.
That led many in the field to be outraged.
Now, in an email to the "New York Times," Greenfield says he hopes those judging him will read the article in the spirit it was intended.
The American College of Surgeons says it will have an official statement on Dr. Greenfield's departure later today.
