Many homes in Springfield are starting to experience frozen water pipes
because of the lack of heat and extended cold temperatures. But is the
water safe to drink when you get back home?City Utilities general manager John Twitty said the city's water treatment plants are all operating normally. He said the city water is safe to drink and meets all standards for drinking water quality required by the state.
If you return home after several days of being gone, Twitty says you may notice rusty water in your pipes. He said to let your faucetts run for a few minutes to clear the rust out of the lines.
Three city water mains broke overnight, but Twitty said those were being repaired and had not affected the water supply.
