(Washington, DC)  --  There's a clear sign in just-released unemployment figures the ailing economy is growing weaker.

Bloomberg.com reports the number of American workers getting jobless benefits has reached the highest level in 26 years.

The Labor Department reports more than four-million people received government unemployment checks during the week ending November 22nd.

There was a drop of 21,000, however, in initial jobless claims last week to 509-thousand.

California, Ohio and Michigan had the largest increases in people filing for new unemployment benefits claims.

Analysts say the kinds of businesses that are likely to keep shedding jobs in this tough economic climate include factories, banks and retailers.
