SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- An illegal dump site is causing a stink in a west Springfield neighborhood.

Virginia Shisler lives near the intersection of W. Grand Street and S. Western Avenue. She says she's tired of the trash and debris.

"You look down there and all of a sudden they're down there throwing trash," she says. "They had mattresses. They've thrown everything down there."

She called the city three months ago after noticing loads and loads of trash, used building materials, concrete, and other things continuously being dumped on the land along West Bypass.

"They still bring loads of stuff all the time and dump it out there," adds Shisler. "You can smell it. They've got all kinds of trash."

Trash that sometimes attracts stray dogs and other wild animals.

"It does stink and I mean there's nothing I can do. I just keep my fingers crossed that maybe they'll make them clean."

City staff members are aware of the problem.

"The property owner has been notified to get the site cleaned up," says Chris Straw with Building Development Services.

The City has given the property owner until Monday to get the piles off the land. After that, the City will start issuing tickets. However, they will be lenient if she shows she is at least starting to get the place cleaned up.

"She has contacted the inspector and informed him she is working on it and has removed most of the trash and is removing other materials dumped on the site," adds Straw.

It's giving neighbors like Virginia a little more hope.

"It's really a nuisance to drive through and look over there," says Shisler. "I'd rather see the bushes and trees down there. I don't even come that way if I can help it cause I got tired of it."

Straw says the land is in the middle of a floodway of a flood plain, so it does flood, which makes it hard to put a fence or barricade around the property. He says to the City's knowledge, the property owner did not authorize any of the dumping.
