SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- After nearly a year and a half of construction, the Dan Kinney Family Center will officially open this weekend.

Grand opening events for the 35,279 square-foot center at the new 18.3-acre Dan Kinney Park (2701 S. Blackman Rd.) will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 12.

There will be a ribbon-cutting, facility tours, equipment demonstrations, and children's activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The two-level facility includes a full-size gymnasium, indoor 1/16-mile walking/running track, fitness center and weight room, aerobics room, game room, childcare, community room and locker rooms.

The building has been designed to meet LEED Silver certification with plans for a future gymnasium and aquatics center. It's named for longtime Parks Director Dan Kinney.

This is the park system's third family center, which serves an estimated 275,000 people in Greene County.

The $5.2 million building project was made possible through county-wide voter-approved Parks Sales Tax and bonding arrangements with Greene County.

Individual, family and corporate memberships are available now. For membership information, call the Dan Kinney Family Center at (417) 891-1500 or visit parkboard.org/dkfc.

The development of this center was met with some opposition by the Ozarks Regional YMCA. It claimed the facility would take away customers from its existing locations.
