(Springfield, MO) -- Summer break has officially started for thousands of students at Springfield Public Schools.

They got a two-hour early release on their last day Wednesday. The end of the school year came a little earlier this year since the R-12 School District didn't use any snow days.

But Springfield students will also head back to class a week earlier than usual this fall.

The Springfield School Board approved changes to the district calendar so students could finish their first semester before the winter break.

But for now, parents are just thinking about having their kids home for the summer.

"It's kind of sad because she's leaving and moving onto bigger and better things," says mother Lois Keeton. "So she's getting older and it makes it sad for us. But yes we're excited."

Fall classes will start August 15.

Thursday is the deadline to register for summer school classes. You can find out everything you need to know on the SPS website.
