You can find out how to protect yourself and your family from a major outbreak of flu, at a free program tonight with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.

The "Take the First Step" program will encourage people to prepare for emergencies ahead of time.

The event will be held at 6:00 pm at Hammons Heart Institute.  According to a statement from the city-county Health Department, experts will share information about the history of pandemic influenza, current planning efforts and steps individuals can take to be better prepared.

"Experts estimate approximately 1/3 of our workforce will be unable to work during a pandemic, either because they are ill, or because they are caring for someone else who is ill", said Health director Kevin Gipson.

People who attend the program tonight will learn three basic steps to prepare for pandemic influenza.  The steps include developing a family plan, preparing an emergency supplies kit and knowing where to get credible, local information during a pandemic, Gipson said.  They will also get a free planning materials including a booklet and a DVD.

The event is free and open to the public.
