(Springfield, MO) -- Five canned food items for the Salvation Army earned donators a free movie ticket Saturday, and people in the Ozarks responded in a huge way.
Nearly 26,000 canned food items were collected at the Wehrenberg theater for the annual Cans Film Festival.
Last year's event took in 24,000 cans.
Guests who brought in five canned food items, got a free movie ticket before 5p.m.
The person who donated the most cans gets a year-long movie pass.
Those who brought in an additional 10 cans per person also received a free movie pass for a future visit.
Volunteers with the Salvation Army worked all afternoon sorting the donations.
The Salvation Army says about 1,000 families will come to them in need of Christmas assistance this year and this will help greatly.
"That will help as we put meals on peoples tables at Christmas time, but also this helps us to get through the spring as well with our general food pantry and our social services," said Maj. Norman Grainger with the Salvation Army. "It really helps because we have quite a bit of people who come to us on a weekly basis for food at our food pantry "
There about 400 toys were also donated during a breakfast drive at Village Inn.
The Salvation Army says it still needs more volunteers Monday to help box more of the donations.
