(Arnold) -- Seven show dogs including a prized Akita are dead and an eighth is recovering after their handler left them in a hot van for several hours.
Dog handler Mary Wild, 24, returned home from an Iowa dog show at 1:00 a.m. Monday.
She decided that because of the heat she would leave the dogs in their portable kennels in the van.
She set up fans and went to bed.
She found them in distress later.
Seven died of heat stroke.
Dr. Laura Ivan is the veterinarian whose office received the dogs.
She is caring for the survivor.
She called the deaths "not intentional but a horrible tragic accident."
