(Chicago, IL) -- Burgeoning deficits are prompting public school districts to implement massive layoffs due to the slumping economy.
Those layoffs are a stark contrast to President Obama's promise to improve education in the U.S.
Earlier this week, Obama proposed lengthening the school year and paying the top teachers more money.
Obama's $787-billion federal stimulus package also includes billions of dollars for schools.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said some 44-billion dollars in federal stimulus money will start flowing to states in the next month and a half.
