  • Q&A with Dr. Pyatt
Q: How often do I need to have my teeth professionally cleaned?
A: Every 6 months for some. Other may need every 3-4 months depending on the degree of gum disease. Decay and gum problems can run rampant in a very short time, so it is essential to your overall oral health to keep on top of things. Just like changing the oil in your car every 3000miles!

Q: What if I’m not having any problems?
A: Make your appointment anyway! Decay and many oral diseases can be asymptomatic until the onset of infection. When infection occurs the underlying problem has been present for awhile. Most people wait until they are in pain to visit their dentist then they associate the cause of that pain with the dental visit. Come visit Dr. Pyatt before there is pain!

Q: Can’t I just get them cleaned and not have the exams or the x-rays?
A: During the exam the dentist is checking for several things: the presence of a host of systemic diseases and oral cancer. X-rays are a diagnostic tool used to spot decay that the dentist cannot visually discern (between the teeth or below the gum level). They also pick up the bone loss that indicates gum disease and cysts and tumors are visible on panoramic x-rays.

Q: What is periodontal or gum disease?
A: Infections that affect the tissue and bone that support the teeth. It causes bleeding, pocketing, mobility of the teeth, and eventually tooth loss.

Q: How can I prevent “perio” disease?
A: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Clean between your teeth once a day with dental floss. Have a regular professional cleaning ( at least twice a year) with Dr. Pyatt!! Only your dentist can remove hardened tartar.

If you need extra help controlling the problem your dentist can prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse.
