  • Laclede County Home Shares the Christmas Spirit
    Reported by: David Oliver

    Tuesday, Dec 23, 2008 @09:47pm CST

Last week in Oliver's Ozarks we showed you an amazing Christmas light display in Southeast Springfield. So not to be repetitive, we hadn't planned on profiling another well lit home for this week.

That is until we heard about Ray and Brenda Jones in rural Laclede County. Besides featuring thousands of lights, their property offers a real taste of what an old time Christmas was like years ago.

"I love Christmas. It's my favorite time of the year. I just go crazy" says homeowner Brenda Jones.

That may be an understatement at the home of Ray and Brenda Jones.

For the last 15 years they've been putting up a holiday light display that seems to grow and grow and grow. This year 25,000 lights adorn their property.

"Started out putting out lights for my kids, probably 300 lights or so. We just grow a little every year" says Ray Jones.

In the last few years the Jones display has grown in a very unique way. Because the ice storm knocked down so many trees on their property, Ray and Brenda decided to use their new found land to construct an authentic old time Christmas village.

"I built this cabin for it years ago. Then I got a post office and a general store and a church, a small church" says Ray Jones.

Inside the general store you'll find lots of antiques. And it's items like this that Ray and Brenda say take them back to Christmas' past.

"I just love this old way of life. I love the old antique stuff. That's just home to me, how I was raised" says Brenda Jones.

"It's just an old time Christmas. And I think a lot of people has forgot what the true meaning of it is. So I hope this brings them back" says Ray Jones.

Ray and Brenda open their home, and the village, all month long to local families who want to stop by for a tour. Santa even stops by the Jones Christmas village to say hello to the kids; many of whom are experiencing this kind of Christmas for the first time.

"They love it. They love the cabin and looking at everything. It just kind of helps them see how things used to be" says Brenda Jones.

Ray and Brenda also invite area senior citizen groups out to take a tour of the old village and see the majesty of the lights. It's their way of making Christmas a little more merry, and a lot more bright.

"It just gives us joy to give someone else joy" says Brenda Jones.

Ray built all the village buildings himself. And the Jones' family has won the Christmas light contest in Lebanon for the last six years.

    DIRECTIONS:

To get to the display, take I-44 east to the Phillipsburg exit. At the off-ramp, turn left toward Highway A. Follow A until you get to the intersection of highways 32 and OO. Go Straight onto OO and follow until you see the first gravel road on your right, which is Eisenhower road. Follow the gravel road down about a half a mile, you can't miss the Jones home on the right.

Thursday's explosion in Springfield brings to mind the need to plan for emergencies. Does your family have an emergency plan and disaster kit?
No, we've been meaning to do it, but haven't
Yes, the ice storms taught us that lesson
I didn't know we needed one
     I don't think they're necessary
