  • Three Charged in Lebanon Beating Death, Assault

    Tuesday, Jun 12, 2007 @02:43pm CDT

Prosecutors Tuesday filed murder and assault charges against three people for a fight at a Lebanon city park that left one person dead and another critically injured.

The fight happened late Sunday night at Atchley Park on North Highway 5.   Lebanon police say Zachary Jones, 17, died early Monday morning of his injuries at an area hospital.  Court documents say his skull was broken in several places and he had a number of severe injuries to his chest and back.

Witnesses told investigators Jones and Matthew Bankston were attacked with metal pipes and baseball bats, by several people, apparently in an argument over a girl.

Bankston suffered critical injuries and is still hospitalized.

Four adults and a juvenile were arrested Monday.  Tuesday, prosecutors filed charges against Jerry Lowell Broyles II, 25, Terry Lynn Dunkin, 33, and Kimberly Elaine Dunkin, 35, all of Lebanon.  Broyles and Terry Dunkin are both charged with first degree murder, first degree assault and armed criminal action.  Kimberly Dunkin is charged with second degree murder.

According to court documents, Jones and Bankston apparently had been sending text messages to a girl investigators identified as Broyles' girlfriend.  Broyles, the Dunkins and at least three other people went to the park to meet Jones and Bankston, investigators say, armed with baseball bats and a metal bar.

A third teen with Jones and Bankston fled when the fight started  to call for help.  Witnesses told police Jones and Bankston were repeatedly struck after being knocked to the ground.

Investigators found one of the bats used in the fight.  It has been tossed out of Broyles' car after the group left the park.  Another bat and the metal pipe, along with other evidence, were found in Broyles' home.

Court dates have not been set for the three.
