Thursday, Nov 26, 2009 @05:25am CST (Atlanta, GA) -- CDC officials say they are seeing what they call a "worrisome spike" in pneumococcal disease related to the H1N1 flu pandemic. Flu pandemics historically put people at risk for bacterial pneumonia problems, and the H1N1 flu is no exception. The CDC says that with the current flu pandemic, there is an increase in pneumococcal infections, especially in non-elderly adults. The CDC says there was a three-fold increase in invasive pneumococcal disease in metro Denver in October. Invasive pneumococcal disease is particularly serious because it invades the bloodstream.
