Wednesday, Nov 18, 2009 @04:34am CST (Washington, DC) -- Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is proposing more federal support for schools serving fruits, vegetables and whole grains to students. Those schools would get more money and food from the government than schools that offer meals laden with fat and sugar. Nearly 40-million lunches are served each school day across America. Schools currently receive a little less than three-dollars in cash and Agriculture Department-provided food for each lunch served free of charge to needy children. Vilsack is trying to combat an obesity epidemic among kids, as nearly one-third of American children are now either overweight or obese. Obesity is tied to a litany of health problems like heart disease and diabetes. (Copyright 2009 by VERTEXNews/Newsroom Solutions) |
