Reported by: Sonya Kullmann Monday, Nov 9, 2009 @07:22am CST Composting fall leaves is greener than sending them to a landfill, right? Some might say no. It's a big debate right now in Michigan, as the legislature considers a new bill. The bill would allow waste like leaves or grass clippings to go to landfills. Currently, people have to take organic waste like that to recycling centers or compost it themselves. But some say adding more to the landfills will help the state get more out of the landfills. As waste breaks down, it produces methane gas. Utilities are starting to harness that and use it for power. With more decomposition happening in landfills, more methane is created. Others disagree, especially those who rely on yard waste for their businesses. They take the waste people don't want, and turn it into compost or mulch they can sell. They say this will shut down an industry that's really beginning to catch on, as people look for more organic ways to garden. Lawmakers say the debate is far from over. |
