Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @06:15am CST Old water bottles aren't just sitting in the landfill in one country. They're getting a new use. That old plastic is being turned into a polyester fabric, and that is helping disaster victims. It's all thanks to a Buddhist charity. It's been collecting plastic bottles from Taipei for three years. That's a city of 2.6 million, so it may not be surprising volunteers have managed to turn those bottles into 244,000 blankets. Those have gone to disaster zone victims all over the world. They even sent some to the u-s after Hurricane Katrina. Now, the charity's expanding its efforts. It's started to use the fabric to make shirts, scarves, and reusable shopping bags. Volunteers gather each day to help with the production. They often turn out 3,000 blankets per day. |
