Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @07:46pm CST Now that Halloween is over, what do you do with your old pumpkins?
This is how the Dickerson Park Zoo deals with the leftover gourds. Today several animals at the zoo, including the hippos and elephants, were treated to a pumpkin snack. These are the pumpkins that didn't get carved up during Spooktacular. Zoo leaders say it gives the animals something different to stimulate their senses. "Enrichment is an opportunity for the keepers to provide something novel or unique for the animals to stimulate their instincts, give then some variety. So it's part of their diet at this time while we have the pumpkins," said Melinda Arnold of the Dickerson Park Zoo. Other animals at the zoo like the birds and primates get a chance to feast on other parts of the pumpkins like the seeds and the pulp. |
