Reported by: Emily Baucum Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @09:47pm CST Springfield voters faced another big ballot issue whether to continue a $50 million dollar bond for Springfield Public Schools.
Members of the School Board worried voters would be turned off by two very big money issues on the ballot. With all precincts reporting, 65% of voters said yes and 35% said no. Of course that bond issue is a continuation of a bond voters approved in 2006. So it's not a tax increase because tax payers are already paying for it. The money will go towards school improvements including air conditioning in more schools and also to possibly consolidating some school locations. Members of the Board say this is a victory for students. They consider it a vote of confidence. The people wanted the School Board to move ahead with plans to improve facilities. "We know what we're going to do with this money. Just like in 2006 we have a list of priorities. We're going to follow that list of priorities. We've been very transparent with the taxpayers on what we're going to do," said School Board Member Dr. Tom Prater. |
