  • Clerk Expects 20-Percent Voter Turnout Today

    Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @04:22am CST

(Springfield, MO) -- Voters across the Ozarks today are being asked to decide some big money issues.

Greene County Clerk Richard Struckhoff says he doesn't remember the last time two large money issues were on the same ballot.  The City of Springfield has it's police/fire pension sales tax on the ballot.  And the Springfield R-12 school system has a $50 million bond issue.

Struckhoff expects about a 20-percent voter turnout.  That's about 3-percent higher than the February election.

He also doesn't recall the last time the flu has played such a large part of election planning.

His office purchased several dispensers of sanitizer for each of the polling places and also came up with a game plan in case a site had to be shut down.

"We talked to R-12 and they assured us that any schools that are being used, and I think there are 12 of the R-12 schools still being used as polling places, if any of those schools would have to shut down on election day they would certainly get people in there to scrub them down for the voters and they would remain open," Struckhoff says.

Disabled voters who want to cast a ballot independently can find a touch screen machine in the historic courthouse today.

Voters with visual impairments will also have the option of voting an optical scan ballot with assistance at their usual polling place.

There are a few polling place changes for today's election.
Voters in First North Campbell Township will vote in a new location. They'll need to go to the East Sunshine Church of Christ for this election only.

Struckhoff also wants to remind voters in North Republic that their polling site is not changing.
They'll still need to go to the old Republic Library branch, even though the library is moving to its new location.

You can see what's on the ballot and follow live election results after the polls close at 7:00 pm tonight on our Elections page.

Thursday's explosion in Springfield brings to mind the need to plan for emergencies. Does your family have an emergency plan and disaster kit?
No, we've been meaning to do it, but haven't
Yes, the ice storms taught us that lesson
I didn't know we needed one
     I don't think they're necessary
