  • Maryland Preparing Now for Higher Tides

    Thursday, Oct 29, 2009 @06:32am CDT

One U.S. state with a lot of shoreline isn't take any chances.
It's getting ready now for global warming to send more water its way.

A North Pole expedition just predicted that very soon, arctic ice will melt every summer.
That will send a lot more water to shorelines.

It's something the state of Maryland is preparing for. It has to worry about both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay.
A study released in the journal "Environmental Research Letters," says land that can't be protected now will be lost in the future.

So, Maryland is creating "living shorelines."  The state is putting in plants along waterways to act as natural water buffers.

It's also setting aside critical, undeveloped land as places to establish new marshes, where extra water can flow.
Planners are even considering raising sidewalks and streets to protect the state's infrastructure.
