  • Fire and Police Rank and File Hit Streets for Tax Propo...
    Reported by: Jessica Williams

    Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009 @11:12am CDT

It's been called one of the biggest issues facing Springfield. And voters could make a decision, in seven days.

Supporters of the police and fire pension fund tax are making a last minute push to convince people why the three fourths cent sales tax, is needed.

"I want to see the fire department stay stable, so I might be in favor of it, but at this point, I really don't know, I'll continue to read about it," said Nadine Rhodes.

While the majority of people already have their minds made up about the police and fire pension fund, it's because of people like Rhodes, that Shawn Martin keeps pushing.  "Probably 1 in 15 are still undecided and would like the information, and we're there to provide that for them," said Martin.

In this last week before the election, Martin said the firefighters Local 152 Union is sending out mailers, handing out pamphlets door to door,  and holding a rally. "We want to make sure when we're broken down in our late fifties and we're asked to leave our job- we're not going to be financially destitute," said Martin.

But he realizes that no matter what effort he goes through, some people will still say no to the three fourth's cent sales tax. "We understand why they feel that way.  They feel this is a problem that individuals from several years ago haven't been held accountable for," said Martin.

The Fire Pension Fund is facing a more than two hundred million dollar shortfall, which Mayor Jim O'Neal attributes to years of insufficient funding as well poor market performance and changes to benefits for the fund.  Rhodes said she's already heard everything she needs to hear-- on both sides of the issue. She's still not sure how she'll vote next Tuesday. But she says no amount of phone calls, mailers or yard signs, will  influence her decision. "I make up my own mind," said Rhodes.

The firefighters Local 152 Union will hold a rally this Thursday. It will be at the Teamsters union hall on East Division at 8 a.m. The President of the Firefighters Union will be flying in from Washington D.C. to speak about this issue.
