Reported by: Kevin Schwaller Sunday, Oct 25, 2009 @09:58pm CDT (Springfield, MO) -- Many Missourians are looking for jobs in this recession. But what should you do while you're applying?
KOLR10/KSFX put together some tips about how to improve your resume while you send it out. A District Manager for LaborMax Staffing suggests doing something to create networking opportunities. She says LaborMax looks for motivation, dedication and availability. Gus Telios is working while he searches for a new job. "I can't complain," he said. "I'm living and I'm paying my bills." He says he was laid off from the Las Vegas hotel industry about six months ago. He moved to the Ozarks to get closer to family. "A lot of places, they just say 'I'm sorry we're filled up right now,'" Telios said. Telios says he's trying to improve his resume and bring in money by working through a local staffing agency. Right now he is working at a linen company. "I'm just rolling rugs for them and sometimes they have me filling orders," Telios said. "It's labor work." A blogger for U.S. News and World Report suggests finding freelance or temporary work while you send out resumes. She says applicants should try to do something they can talk about in interviews. Other ideas include volunteering, picking up a new language or learning a new skill related to your field. Nicole Zapata says she thinks it's important to show a potential employer you're motivated. "I was laid off from my other job back in March," said Zapata. "I was always doing something until I found, you know, something to land on." Zapata has a temporary position at LaborMax right now. However, she has doubts about how much impact other strategies might will have on an employer's discussion. "Could go either way," said Zapata. "It could help but...is it going to help with the economy the way it is?" Both workers hope their temporary positions will help them get a more permanent job soon.
