Eco-palms Used for Palm Sunday

Worshippers typically get a palm branch on Palm Sunday to commemorate how Jesus was greeted as he made his way into Jerusalem. But this year for about 2,100 churches, those palm branches were different. They were eco-palms and are specially harvested plants that do not contribute to deforestation. It's a joint project of the Presbyterian Church of the United States, Lutheran World Relief and Catholic Relief Services. The palms are grown by rural farm cooperatives in Mexico and Guatemala. The United States typically uses about 300 million palm fronds each year.
