Friday, Aug 28, 2009 @04:08am CDT (Jefferson City, MO) -- Senator Claire McCaskill was met by an unruly crowd in Jefferson City on her cross-state town hall tour of Missouri. Close to 400 people came to question McCaskill on heath care reform. From the start, the meeting was heated, with no shortage of verbal fireworks. "The kids that come to this school, they are taught respect and tolerance and all I'm asking you to do, all I'm asking you to do, is to allow other people to participate," she asked the crowd. McCaskill knows she likely won't change any minds with these town hall meetings. She says their impact won't be apparent until next month when Congress reconvenes after a very heated August recess. McCaskill will bring her town halls to Springfield and West Plains Monday. The Springfield event begins at 12:30 pm at the Gillioz Theater downtown. KOLR10 News will broadcast the forum live. A slightly less rowdy town hall meeting was also held in northwest Arkansas Thursday. Republican Congressman John Boozman and U.S. Senators Tom Coburn and John Barrasso are touring the country to get feedback and suggestions on healthcare reform. "We need more choice. We need insurance we can buy that's not related to our employer," said Melanie Elliott of Bentonville, Arkansas. The Senators say one-sixth of the U.S. budget is tied up in health care. They're trying to keep those costs from rising by "trimming the fat" from the country's current healthcare system. |
