  • The Quirkles - Yawning Yolanda's Glowing Snot

    Yawning Yolanda's Glowing Snot

This is guaranteed to be "grossly" fun!

    Objective:
To learn why our bodies produce snot, and to create a solution that looks and feels like snot

    Materials:
    Glue gel-four ounce size
    Hot water
    Yellow and green food coloring
Borax (found in the laundry section of most stores)
Glow powder (found online or at craft stores)*
    Two small bowls
    Measuring cup
    Measuring spoons
Wooden craft stick (or something for stirring)

    Procedure:
In one bowl mix together one-half cup hot water and one-third cup borax. Stir until it stops dissolving. You will be using the liquid part of this solution. Set aside. Next, mix the glue gel with one cup of hot water. Place one drop of green food coloring and two drops of yellow food coloring into the glue mixture to give it a true snot color. Pour the borax solution into the glue solution, and let it sit for one minute. Dig in with your hands and squeeze the "snot."
*If you want snot that glows, place a teaspoon of glow powder in the borax and water solution. Go into a dark room and see what happens! Try it under a black light.

    Conclusion:
Have you ever wondered why our bodies produce snot? Snot keeps "junk" from going into your lungs. Your nose makes a new batch of snot every twenty minutes! If you have a cold, the yellow or green snot color is caused by bacteria. You have created a polymer that looks like snot. The borax links the glue molecules together.
