Tuesday, Jun 9, 2009 @05:48am CDT ![]() This is either a day to make a whale of a deal on a new car or to be filled with sadness over the loss of some part of the community. This is the day 789 Chrysler dealers across the nation are set to close their doors. (see the list here) In some cases the dealership won't be gone entirely. Some carry other car makes but in towns from Alabama to Wyoming citizens may be hard pressed tomorrow to find a shiny new Dodge, Chrysler or Jeep. Before long the domino effect of the closures will be felt by local suppliers of everything from sandwiches to tires. Pennsylvania stands to see the largest loss with 53 dealerships closing. Texas is next with 50 followed by Ohio at 47 and Illinois at 44. Chrysler says the 789 dealers that have lost their franchise accounted for only about 14-percent of total sales. Even after the closures, there will be more than 24-hundred Chrysler dealers in the U.S., about double the number of Toyota dealers. Meanwhile, General Motors, which has also gone into Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is planning to shutter up to 1100 dealerships. Each auto dealership averages about 50 employees. The Chrysler closures alone mean another 40,000 people may be out of work tomorrow. (Copyright 2009 by Newsroom Solutions) |
