Friday, Dec 21, 2007 @06:59pm CST The Springfield Police Officer's Association chose the Family Violence Center for its biggest annual Christmas gathering. It's something they budget for each year.
Officer Angela Burgess says it's really a tough time of year and the force wanted to brighten up the kids' holidays. So they ordered pizza and even had a visit from Santa. "It's very important because a lot of times they only see us in a light where mom and dad are in a fight. It's been a really stressful, scary situation. We like to come in and show them it's okay and we're here to help them get through the difficult times." About thirty kids, ranging from one month old to 18 years old, took part in the fun. Ten to 15 officers took part, some stopping by to say hello, others sticking around all night. Last year the Springfield Police Officer's Association budgeted to help individual families. This year it picked the Family Violence Center. There are about 200 officers in the association, who all take pride in taking turns enjoying spending time with outside communities. |
