  • Shooting of Soldiers Called "Terrorist" Act

    Tuesday, Jun 2, 2009 @05:52am CDT

(Little Rock)  --  A suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting of two Army recruiting officers in Little Rock Monday.

One of those soldiers died and the other is being treated for non-life threatening wounds.

Local law enforcement officials say they have 24-year-old Abdulhakim Muhammad in custody.
He's a U.S. citizen who changed his name from Carlos Leon Bledsoe after he converted to the Muslim faith.

A police report says the alleged shooter has confessed.
"At this point we believe it's associated with his disagreement  over the military operations.  We believe that primarily it's a religious  basis.  He has a dislike of military policy and military actions.  And that's  why we believe he committed these acts," said Little Rock police chief Steward Thomas.

He told police he saw the two uniformed U.S. soldiers in front of a recruiting office before he shot and killed 23-year-old Private William Long and wounded 18-year-old private Quinton Ezeagwula.

The report says when officers stopped the man's vehicle he offered no resistance and told them there was a bomb in the car.

There wasn't, but investigators did discover more than 100 rounds of ammunition loaded in magazines, an assault rifle and a couple of pistols.

Muhammad had reportedly been under investigation by the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force since he returned to the U.S. from Yemen but Little Rock police say there's no indication he was part of any larger conspiracy.

       The investigation is continuing.
