Reported by: David Oliver Tuesday, May 19, 2009 @10:06pm CDT What
kind of music do your kids listen too?
Bluegrass probably isn't top on the play list. Unless you're the Greer family of
Lebanon. In fact this old time genre is
a big part of what keeps mom, dad and the kids in tune with each other,
Literally. “We
just decided well, we're going to spend our time doing something. Why don't we do something that we like and
would be different from everybody else” says John Greer. Now
the Greer's are marching to the beat of their own band. John, Kathie, Tate, Jase and Katie are known
to people around the nation as the Lindley Creek Bluegrass
family. “People
tell us when they come to see us play that it's obvious that we care about each
other and that we love what we're doing” says Kathie
Greer. The
music started about 7 years ago. Tate,
then just 9, started taking banjo lessons.
Soon after, dad learned how to play the double bass and mom taught
herself some chords on the guitar. Jase picked up the fiddle and Katie mastered
the mandolin. “and
the next thing we knew we were spending 3 or 4 or 5 nights in a row in the
living room playing” says John Greer. The
Greer's started playing the jam session circuit. But soon, they started getting requests to
entertain bluegrass fans around the nation and the world. “today
we're playing in several different places.
I think this year we'll play in 11 different states. We actually went to Costa Rica last winter”
says John Greer. “I
mostly enjoy going to the different places and seeing new places” says Jase
Greer. The
Greer's play by ear, and have lots of tunes in their arsenal. It seems their fan base is growing in part
because of growing interest in these old time sounds. “Because
it's real music, and about real life people and real situations. And as we get back our roots, we see a lot
more people get exposure to that” says John Greer. “There's
a lot of people out there that discover that they like bluegrass music, they
just hadn't heard it before. Or they
hadn't heard it done well” says Kathie Greer. The
music has served this family well too.
They say it's helped them stay connected to each other through a common
goal. “We
just kind of keep looking for openings and opportunities to play and share our
message of how it's worked in our lives and we want to encourage families to
spend more time with their families” says John Greer. If
you'd like to hear the Greer Family in action, they'll be in a bluegrass
competition this weekend at Silver Dollar City.
Monday they'll perform at a special homecoming event in Louisburg at the
picnic grounds. They have two shows at
