  • KOLR/KSFX Signal Now All Digital
    Reported by: David Oliver

    Friday, Apr 17, 2009 @04:30am CDT

(Springfield, MO) -- The way you see KOLR/KSFX is changing forever.  At midnight on April 17, the over the air analog signal will stop.   We'll only be broadcasting in digital.

There's been a lot of promotion leading up to this change.  So how can you make sure you're ready?

"We've been working on this for a long time, seems like forever," says Mark Gordon, Vice President, Nexstar Broadcasting.

And it all leads up to late Thursday night.   At midnight, KOLR10 and KSFX-TV will turn off the over the air analog signal.  Most people are prepared.   But some may get left in the dark.

"I'm concerned for that small percentage of the population that are, like I am sometimes, technically challenged.   Particularly the elderly.  This stuff is new and they don't understand it," says Gordon.

If you have an analog TV and antenna, you'll need to have a converter box hooked up.  If you've already done that, you'll want to rescan your box to make sure you're picking up the right channels.

"I think there will be some confusion, but it has to happen and everyone knows that," says Gordon.

"The transition went very smoothly, at least on our end," says Arlen Diamond, Ozarks Public Television.

Ozarks Public Television made the switch to digital a couple weeks ago.   Diamond says even though the FCC thought Springfield had many viewers unprepared, very few have called in for help.

"Probably the biggest area that had us puzzled are those people who called and said, 'I've got the converter, I just never hooked it up,'" says Diamond.

If that's you, hook it up Thursday night or you won't see KOLR10 and KSFX-TV in the morning.  If you're TV is ready, get yourself ready to enjoy the clarity.

"The colors are clearer.  The focus is better.  So with an old analog set and a converter box, you're in good shape," says Gordon.

The government is issuing converter box coupons again, if you missed out on the first batch.  Click here for the website to sign up for a converter box coupon.  If you don't want to wait and still need a converter, you can pick one up at most electronic stores.  But again, if you have cable or satellite in your home you don't have to do anything.

After midnight, if you're having problems, re-scanning the channels on your converter box or digital TV should fix it.  That way you'll get our new digital frequency.

If you're still having problems, you can stop by the KOLR/KSFX station on East Division in Springfield.  We'll have walk-in help from Noon to 8:00 p.m., starting on Friday.

You can also call us from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at 862-1010.  Over the weekend, phones will be open from Noon to 8:00 p.m.  And they'll be open during business hours all next week.
